Your iPhone combines satellites, Wi-Fi and cell towers. Indoors or between tall buildings it often relies on Wi-Fi and cell towers. Go outdoors with a clear view of the sky and wait 30–60 seconds for a satellite fix.
iOS doesn’t give apps access to individual satellites or their signal strength. The “Signal & Fix” card estimates the source from the accuracy and update rate instead. “About GNSS” in the app explains more.
The topographic maps keep the areas you have already viewed (up to the storage limit you choose in Settings ▸ Offline Maps, 250 MB by default), so they work offline there. To prepare for a hike, save the area: on the Topographic map (with a Thunderforest key), tap the download button and choose the level of detail. Saved areas are listed in Settings ▸ Saved Areas. Without internet, a built-in basic world map shows borders, main roads, rivers and towns. Coordinates, altitude and the compass always work offline.
Without any setup, the Topographic style uses OpenTopoMap and the Rain Radar layer uses RainViewer. For the Thunderforest Outdoors map (and saving areas offline), get a free API key at thunderforest.com; for the Clouds, Precipitation, Temperature and Wind layers, get a free key at openweathermap.org. Enter them in Settings (gear button) and tap Check Key. A new OpenWeather key can take a few hours to start working.
Check your Thunderforest key in Settings (Check Key). If the service is unavailable, choose OpenTopoMap from the map-style menu, or remove the key to use OpenTopoMap automatically.
Air pressure needs a barometer. All recent iPhones have one, but some iPads don’t.
